7 steps to get work permit: Issues in Canada for international students

If you are an international student in Canada, you can work on-campus and off-campus without a separate work permit. The work permit is processed along with your study permit when you apply for it. Here are 7 steps to get your work permit together with your study permit.

  1. Get the required materials

Preparation is the first step to getting a study and work permit. You’ll need to have the acceptance letter from your university as well as a valid passport or other equivalent travel document. You’ll also need a medical examination and proof to show that you have the necessary funds to bear the tuition and living expenses.

  1. Online or paper

The next step is to determine whether you want to apply online or on paper. There are different requirements for both. You can find out about the eligibility criteria by contact us.

  1. Procure the application guide

This is the complete set of forms you’ll need to submit with the application. The exact number and type of documents will vary depending on the country you are applying from. Contact us to find out which documents you need to submit according to your country of application. The forms can be downloaded and printed easily. Once you have the hard copies of the forms with you, fill them out completely.

  1. Payment of fees

The next step is to pay the application fee. You can pay in any country as long as the payment is made in Canadian dollars. Payment in any other currency is not acceptable. The fee is non-refundable so make sure that you’ve paid the correct amount. You’ll have to keep the payment receipt with you as it will need to be submitted along with the application.

  1. Submit the application

Once you’ve paid the application fee, you are ready to submit the application. The process differs from country to country. If you’re applying from outside Canada, then in most cases you should be able to submit the application at the VAC or visa application centre in your country. This has the benefit that you can be assured that your application has been delivered to an authorised person.

  1. Track your application

After submitting your application, you’ll get a tracking code that you can use to track your application online. In this way, you’ll know when your application has been delivered or if there is any problem in delivering it.

  1. Receive the work permit

If you’ve submitted all the necessary documents and paid the right fee, you should receive your work permit in a couple of weeks. If not, you can contact your local VAC and they’ll help you contact the right person.

Once you have the study permit, you are free to work up to 20 hours a week part-time on the campus or off-campus. During the winter and summer breaks you can work full-time. Additional proof of this is that your study permit will have a social insurance number or SIN printed on it.
